Hail in Colorado is no joke! In fact, State Farm recently listed Colorado as the worst state for hail damage with over $598 million in hail damage claims last year alone. Colorado’s Front Range, which AAA Roofing and Construction serves, is known as “hail alley” and our area regularly experiences catastrophic hailstorms. It is not uncommon for regions to be pelted with golf ball or even softball-sized hail.
The hail season in Colorado typically lasts from mid-April through September and afternoon thunderstorms are often accompanied by frozen balls of ice. While pebble-sized hail is unlikely to cause much damage, by the time quarter-sized hail comes around, you can expect dents on your car and painful welts if you get hit. Any bigger than that and you might find your windows destroyed and your roof shingles hanging on for dear life.
What To Do During A Hail Storm
If hailstones are larger than a marble, seek shelter immediately. Hail in a single storm can often vary in size and it might only be a matter of time before larger stones begin to fall. Hail can be deadly, and it’s not worth it to run out into a hail storm to try and protect your car or get a good video.
If you find yourself in your car during a major hailstorm, pull over next to a building, into a garage, or anywhere else you can find shelter. However, it is not recommended to park under an overpass on a highway, as other cars might not be able to see you as they approach. If you cannot find shelter, consider placing a blanket or jacket over your head to protect yourself if a hailstone manages to break the windshield.
After The Storm…
After the storm has passed and it is safe to do so, you can go outside to assess any damage that might have been done to your roof, siding, or gutters. Even if there doesn’t appear to be any obvious damage, it is always a good idea to have a professional roofer inspect your roof after a major hail storm. You never know if a hailstone caused some shingles to come loose and you might experience a roof leak during the next rainstorm.
If hail has done some major damage, such as blew a hole right through your roof, we are able to offer 24/7 emergency roofing services. Our team can come out at any time (if safe to do so), put a temporary tarp on the roof, and come back at your earliest convenience to perform a full and thorough inspection.
